Experimentes/ First Shoot

This First part of my filming I shot in the green room. This photo on the left shows the outfit picked and the styling of my character. In some shots I have picked them to wear a black dress but in this one Elle is wearing a white top and jeans, which still follows the conventions.

Here shows Elle when I was preparing the lighting and getting the positioning right for my characters.

My two characters together showing the comparison of them. The positioning of them and creating the right camera angles.

Before shooting I had to prepare my characters to what i wanted them to look like, for example adding make-up and adjusting their hair.

I had Jodee helping me with lighting while I was preparing my characters for filming.

I produced my first shoot in the green room I have taken photos to show the steps and the process of filming the first part of my music video. I have shown the individuals of my characters and what outfits I have chosen for them. I used Jodee to help me with lighting, this shoot was an experiment to see how to create the different shooting methods. This part of filming was mainly to get together some test shots and experiment with the lighting and my two characters together. I am happy with how this part of my filming has gone and I will arrange another opportunity to create better and longer footage.

Ancillary Text Planning

Looking at exsiting album covers I am collecting ideas for my own CD covers I think that the ideas I want to include is the two of my charecters in my video. The album covers only focus on who the band is whereas my CD cover is for the song I have chosen. Below some of the picture ideas I could inspire/ give me ideas for my own.

Possible  ideas:

These 3 photos are taken from Drake and Rihanna's music video which is 'Take Care' This music video insipred me how to create my own CD cover. They're possible ideas which could inspire my own ideas. They show the relationship between the two people. Even though the artists don't follow my genre they're more R&B then indie. I still think it shows a good idea and that the theme of it being shown in black and white follows an aspect of the conventions of indie. They're both wearing casucal clothing with

Drake wearing a plain black t shirt and Rihanna wearing just a baggy jumper. I like this because it shows the true feelings between them both and you can tell by there body langauge. In each photo they're not looking at eachother which links in with my narrative and shows a slight bit of this. Even though this is just a possible idea it is something which I will base my Ancillary Texts around and I want to express this in my work as it is developed. I will produce test shots of two of my main charecters in this style.

While doing my research and planning I have carried out research for my chosen genre which is indie. This has helped me look at certain album/CD covers which cover this genre. For example different layouts and styles. I am going to look at existing products which suit my genre and which follow the different conventions.

This album cover by The 1975 which is an indie rock band which the song I have chosen for my music video is by this band. This album cover is shown very simple it is following the conventions of its genre by using the theme black and white. It simply states the name of the band which is shown in lights which draws attention towards it. I think this album cover is a very typical one which matches its genre. Its not too flashy or colourful which could easy be related to the genre pop. Without knowing what band it was for you would immediately relate it to indie. When producing my own digi pack and CD cover I will take this into consideration I want it to be draw attention but in a simply way and to know that is it the genre I have shown and it follows all the conventions.

From looking at the album cover which suits my conventions this one I wanted to look at in comparison. It shows how it is all brightly coloured and mainly pink which relates to the name of the album. Compared to the one I just looked at it shows the female artist in the album cover which is Nicki Minaj. It shows the attention more to her and the ways she is presented rather than The 1975 cover which draws more towards the attention of the name of the band rather than the way they look and they have just done it towards the music itself. This has shown the difference between the two different genres and the way the conventions are representation are different and how the colours and the artist is shown.

Theory’s applied to my work

Representation Theory

Levi Strauss- 1958 Binary oposites
Levi Strauss came up with the ideas if binary opposites he said that he beleived that we understand words not solely based on their meaning they directly contain, but of our understanding of opposites they reflect hence, 'binary opposites.' The ideas of these terms are culturally constructed. For example I say hero you say..Villian. In the media word binary opposites are used very frequent they're usually the basis of our undertsanding of a story as it is a conventional narrative and enables an equilibrium. Binary opposites are used in films to help plots, they're also used in music videos as part of a narrative to reinforce song lyrics. Levi Strauss' theory links heavily with our ideological values of how we feel we should 'perceive' the world.

Why use binary oposites?
The theory enables us to have an understanding of a narrative before it has even began. Representations re-present them self to an audience to assure understanding, meaning and recognition from a text is understood. Having opposites within a text enables climax and interest, however more recently this can be challenged for e.g in lady Gaga's music video Judas, or films that have a narrative with no clear protagonist/ antagonist.

This music video I have chosen to look at which is Taylor Swift- We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. This gives a good example of the use of binary opposites. For example the boy and the girl when you think of a music videos about relationships/love you you would think of girl aswell as thinking of the boy straight away. This shows how the use of Levi strauss' thoery is used and how it is understood. It is used across a range of music videos and this is just an example of what i have found. I can apply this theory to my own work and my own music video for example looking at my chosen initial idea it included a girl and a boy which is about relationships and the connection between two people so I am using Levit Strauss thoery in my own work. This theory helped enable me to choose and adapt my inital idea because it links in and gave me the abilty to undertsand what binary opposites was a apply it to my own work. It gives a clear example of how they're used in the media world and all the different theorys I am looking at will have a huge impact on my own music video.

Laura Mulvey 1975- Feminism
Lauren Mulveys theory emphasises the curves of the female body, referring to women as objects rather than people. The display of women is how men think they should be perceived and female viewers, view the content through the eyes of a man. The male gaze occurs when the camera puts the audience into the perspective of a hetrosexual man i.e linger over the curves of a womens body. The man emerges as the dominant power within the created film fantasy. The women is passive to the active gaze from the man. Think of all the music videos you see on TV and how the camera objectifies them by focusing on the areas of the body in which you would expect to see 'male gazing' at...Breasts, bottom etc. Mulvey also states that the female gaze is the same as the male gaze because women look at themselves through the eyes of men. The male gaze describes how the audience or viewer is put into the perspective of a heterosexual male. The concept of 'the gaze' is one that deals with how an audience views the people/person presented. for example Miley Cyrus, mulvey states that in film women are typically the objects, rather than the possessors this is displayed by the control of the camera. The camera uses particular movement to perceive women in an idealistic view. Some women may disagree with this use of the camera yet others may feel liberated. A feminist may see the male gaze as either a expression of unequal power between gazer and gazed, or as a conscious or subconscious attempt to develop that inequality, men are more powerful there for is ok to objectify. Summarising the women is displayed for the male gaze to provide pleasure in a sexual way (voyeurism). However women may want to be objectified and find this empowering and this objectification is running theme in music videos and within all media elements.

Applying this to my own music video
This theory I have explained can have an impact on my own music video, the way that Mulvey talks about the way that women as shown and how men view them. In my video I will look at existing music  videos which can show this. Mulvey expresses the theory as not being good for women and I think this will be the way it applies to my work. By not expressing women in a bad way. The way that camera movement expresses this in the way the positions of the women are captured. This will be something I look at when filming mine and thinking about every camera angle which is shot.

John Berger

John Berger analyses the manner in which men and women are culturally represented. In the "Ways of Seeing" Berger claims that the representations of men and women in visual culture entice different "gazes", different ways in which they looked at. He states that 'men act women appear. Men look at women. Women watch them selves been looked at.' The women is usually posed in a way to please the viewer, her gaze is meant to entice the viewer, and this notion is the same in modern day advertisements and photographs. Berger comments that a women unconsciously acts in the way knowing she is being viewed. Women are constantly being surveyed, not only by men but by other women, and by themselves. John Bergers "Ways of Seeing" is an in depth look on art, the way people view it and the influences that traditional oil paintings have had on society and modern day publicity. John Berger looked at art and how historic paintings have adapted to modern day imagery and ideologies. Images are most powerful communicator we have. There are things we cannot describe in words but that images can illustrate. The power images have also mystifies viewers. Berger states that women were 'depicted in a different way to men- because the "ideal" spectator is always assumed to be male and the image of the women is designed to flatter him' Jim Fowles states 'in advertising male gaze and females are gazed at' (Fowles 1996) This shows that both Mulvey and Berger feel that women are the objects for to men to look at, desire and seek pleasure from.

Paul messaris (1997)
Says that female models in ads addressed to women 'treat the lens as a substitute for the eye of an imaginary male onlooker' , adding that it could be argued that when these women look at there ads, they are actually seeing themselves as a man might see them.' This argument by Messaris is saying that women know what they are portraying and that they are able to view themselves as how men want to perceive them to be in control of there desirability.

Women and sex are used profusely in advertisement since it appeals to both women and men. Men want the women and the sex and the women want to be the women. This study looks at and compares how women in the media industry are used for the exact purpose that female nudity was used in traditional oil paintings. To be looked at, desired, envied and to be seen as desirable women, not only by men but also by women.

'Such ads appear to apple to imply a male point of view, even though the intended viewer is often a women. So the women who look at these ads are being invited to identify both with the person being viewed and with an implicit, opposite sex viewer.' ( Messaris 1997) This demonstrates that women are aware of the choices they make and are making these statements for a reason.

Tessa Perkins
Stereotyping is not a simple process and contains a number of assumptions that can be challenged. Tess Perkins (1979) identifies 5 such assumptions; stereotypes are not always negative (e.g 'The French are good cooks'). They are not always about minority groups or less powerful (e.ge. 'upper class twits'). They can be held about one's own group, they are not rigid or unchanging and they are not always false. Perkins says that stereotyping is not a simply process. She identified that some of the many ways that stereotypes are assumed to operate aren't true. As society changes its hard for stereotypes to change as they stick in society. Not all stereotypes are bad, not all good and we categorise our selves.  Stereotypes are always erroneous in content (usually wrong). They are (negative) concepts, they are about groups whom we have little or no social contact; by implication therefore they are not held about ones own group- thats stereotype of a stereotype. They are about minority or repressed groups, they are simple. People either 'hold' stereotype of a group (believe them to be true) or do not. Because someone holds a stereotype of a group, his or her behaviour towards a member of that group can be predicted. Stereotypes are in invaluable aid to understanding the world and all stereotypes must have a bit of truth or they would not have such an influence.

Prop List, Mise-en Scene, Costumes & Locations

Location Ideas:

When planning my music video I have explored different ideas for my a range of locations which could suit my genre and characters. One of my main location ideas is the Beverley Westwood. This is a large woodland area which includes ideal location ideas. It has a vast spacious areas of grass and lot's of trees and hidden away areas. I have gone to this location and taken photos which I have displayed above. I think I will be able to get a range of different shots for my music video here and with it being in short distance from where I live as well as my characters it has easy location to get to. Below shows the greenroom at college which is also where some of my filming will be done. I have ideas that I would like my music video being shot in black and white using this room allows me to use the green background also. I could add different backgrounds but also just use black and white. The lighting in this room is very good and well equipped for example a range of lights up above the green screen which is shown in the videos, but also a range of soft boxes and other lights.  It has a reasonable space which will help when filming and getting the best shots and quality.

Costume & Make-up Ideas

Experiments with make-up and use of costumes:

As my genre is indie rock, I want to follow the codes and conventions in other music videos for the clothing my characters will wear. Make up is also a big part for my character. The costumes I have picked for my 2 main characters are for Jamie, black jeans, white t shirt and black boots. I think this outfit fits in with my video. As Jamie has long messy hair on the top it suits the idea of the look of 'indie' watching and analyzing previous music video which suit this genre shows this. Black and white is shown a main theme running through the videos, I want to include this in my own music video and picking these specific outfits will follow the ideology. My other main character Elle is also following the codes and conventions of  'indie' the outfit I have chose is black jeans/tights, a black dress and leather jacket. Leather jackets are associated with indie and this type of music. My character also wearing long necklaces which goes with the outfit. The outfits chose match up with both characters and between them create the idea to the audience of them being a challenged couple together. Seeing them dressed as matched up to the genre shows the chemistry between the characters. If one character was dressed in the genre of pop/R&B it would challenge the conventions. It wouldn't engage in the music video and the audience wouldn't relate. Whereas if both characters followed the same conventions it draws the audience in. It links in with the music and genre but also created continuity throughout the music video.

Here is Elle which I have experimented with makeup. I wanted very natural but powerful makeup. She has very definite features which is create and was create to experiment with makeup with her. Along with costumes in some scenes I want her hair down but some others up. In different locations I want her look different which will create a nice effect to my music video.

Health & Safety Production Assessment

I created a Health & Safety Production Assessment for possibly accidents when producing my music video. I have included possibly hazards and who is at risk who is included when producing my music video. The controls mean what I will do to prevent the accidents from happening. The Serverity of injury, chance of injury and risk all range from low-possibly high. I will follow this when producing my video so that i avoid any accidents happening when working outside and in the studio. All things I have mentioned could possibly happen so using this will reduce the risk. I will show the people who are in/helping with my music video so that they're aware what could happn and they can follow all the controls to stop injury and hurting themselves.

Casting

Casting List:

Elle Thresh: The girl who is the temptation and referred to as the 'temptation'
Jamie Cording: The main guy who is trying to resist elle
Jodee Evans: Helping with lighting and props

This is my cast list that will feature in my music video, I have sent each person an email to confirm they will help me produce my music video and make sure everything it okay.

This is the email that I sent and everyone replied that it would be okay.

Elle Thresh

Elle will be one of my main character in my music video. She is a media and photography student so she has a creative flare and will be a good person to help me out. She is the girl related to as the temptation she is featured throughout the music video. When performing in my music video I will consider what different props she will use. I will experiment with different costumes and make up which will enhance my chosen genre and I think Elle is well suited for my character.

Jamie Cording

Jamie will be the the main guy in my music video, along side my main character Elle. He is also a photography and media student which will come in very useful when shooting my video. He is very confident around the camera which will be ideal and an ideal main character. He already has an indie look which will be ideal to suit my chosen genre. I will style him matching my chosen genre, from the hair and the clothing I will also think carefully into picking props that i could use.

Jodee Evans

Jodee will help me in my music videos with various things, for example lighting, props and makeup and styling my main characters. Jodee is also a photography and media student so she is aware and familiar with mise-en scene which is perfect when planning my video. She is also aware of how to use a camera and special lightening techniques this will come in very useful when shooting and will help make my music video as good as possible.

Animatic & Story Board

Story Board

I have produced A story board from my chosen initial idea, for this I drew pictures on a story board layout with different boxes. The four different boxes where sound, editing, mise-en-scene and cinematography. For each different section I would write what lyrics could be said with what cip. Editing is what would happen to edit into my next shot, cinematogrpahy would be my camera movements so if it was either a long shot or a birds eye view shot and mise-en-scene would be the location and outfits. By producing this is will make it eaiser for me when producing my music video. By planning ahead what shots will happen where and what type of camera shots I would like to include. Even though some of my ideas will change and it won't be exactly the same by the end of it this helps me plan out produced a well organised product.

Conventions of form

The majority of music vides will follow the conventions of form this means that they all follow certain conventions which creates the music videos. The conventions include things like camera shots, camera angles and camera movement, mise-en-scene, editing, lighting, props and sound.

Camera Shots: Camera Shots are one of the main conventions when making a music video it includes shots like long shots, mid shot and close up. These are all capturing what is happening in the music video and creating the narrative. It is used to crete emphasis on the artist also on the location and what is happening and the emotions. Close-ups can be used more to reflect the lyrics of the song with the movement of the lips but also the emotion side. These are conventions which the majority of music videos will follow. The movement of the camera is also very important it is used to track and follow the artist or band. These movements include things like tilts, pans, tracking shots.

Mise-en-scene: Mise-en-scene is also a very important convention when producing a music video this is because it refers to the arrangement of the performance and props on stage and included in the music video. Mise-en-scene creates the importance and the representation of something. The props are a main part of the mise-en-scene because of the items of clothing they're wearing these sometimes makes it clear of what genre the music video is following. Example of this would be if the music was indie the people in the video might be a band so they would wear leather jackets and black clothing but if the video was following the conventions of a pop/R&B video they would be seen dressed in gold chains and bagging clothing which reflects the genre. Mise-en-scene is included in every music video also including the location this reflects the conventions and how the music video is presented and the genre.

Editing & sound & props: These are used while following the conventions of a music video because it creates the setting and backs up the mise-en-scene. The lighting for example if black and white lighting is used it emphasises the mood of the video. Some video uses artifactual lighting to create a special effect for the artist or band it creates an enhanced look. Sound is mainly the vocals but in some cases the music video is also used to create a short story either before or after and in the middle of the music video. Props are also a vital part in the creating of a music video, they add to the scene and create significance on particular objects and people.

Music conventions of Indie/Rock

Looking at my particular genre even though music videos tend to follow the same conventions despite the genre. Different genres also follow different conventions an example of this is indie/rock will follow the conventions in there music video of wearing mainly black and white. The artist and band is often shown throughout the music video. They use extreme close-ups and long-shots which are popular.
The location is also important and the genre indie they tend to be very dark locations they sometimes use special effects.

Initial Ideas

I have come up with three initial ideas that tell different narratives of what i will be possible choices for my music video. Each idea tell a different narrative but based around my chosen song.

initial idea 1-
song: The 1975- chocolate

The beginning of the narrative starts by expressing about the boy being tempted to start a relationship with the girl which is expressed as a temptation. The temptation is represent of related to as chocolate, even though they're friends he is unsure on whether or not to express his feelings to develop his feelings to develop their feeling and friendship or ruin it. He decided to pursue his love for her which will show his is failing to temptation and going for the chocolate. This is shown throughout the narrative of him trying to avoid the temptation but showing he can't. At the end of the narrative it shows that he didn't do the right thing and ended up breaking up the friendship by going for the wrong temptation and everything ends badly.

initial idea 2-
song: The 1975- chocolate

This narrative will start the same by expressing that the temptation is chocolate, he is thinking of the temptation he is showing he looks normal but he is fighting the temptation of liking. Because he shouldn't it is becoming more of a temptation. By expressing that is hiding something and that is not actually showing what he feels. In the middle of the narrative he decides not to go for the girl who is expressed as 'chocolate.' The end of the narrative shows that he did not develop his feelings and linking back to the beginning he is hiding something.

initial idea 3
song: The 1975 - chocolate

The beginning of the narrative shows the relation of the girl being the temptation of chocolate but them being just friends. It shows him wanting to go for the temptation but not knowing if he should. The middle of the narrative stays the same and he is still not expressing his feelings for the girl and is trying to stay away from the temptation. The girl also has the same temptation as him and the temptation is broke from both of them which it both matches up to the temptation of chocolate.

My chosen initial idea: idea 2

The chosen initial idea is my second idea, which is explained above. I chose this one because I think it is the best one I will be able to express over my music video. From choosing my initial idea I will now go on further to create my planning and researching. Thinking of costume ideas based on my chosen genre and the main story line in my video. I will chose my characters and who is going to take part in my music video and create different filming schedules of when my filming is going to take place. Choosing this will also be a big part towards my story board and anamatic.

History Medium

While carrying out my research before producing my music video I want to find out background information of the history of music videos and how they first emerged. A music video is seen as a short film integrating a song and imagery it is produced for promotional or artistic purposes. The modern type of music video and primarily made and used for marketing the device intended or song. It is to promote the sale of music recordings, although the origins of music videos date much further back and they first became prominence in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium. Prior to the 1980s these works were described by various terms which included illustrated song, film insert, promotional film, promotional clip, song video, film clip.

1902- 1917

The phonoscope was a combined chordophone sound recording with a chronograph film shot that created a sound film. They would record the sound and the singer would lip sing which they then synchronized to create the phonoscope. The first one was presented by Leon Gaumont in 1902 and the first presentation of a phonoscope was presented in Buckingham palace in1907 and the last presentation in 1917. Below is an example of one of the first pronoscene made which shows that basic understanding.

1926- 1959
‘Talkies’ where first introduced in 1926 this made the music industry followed by producing ‘soundies’ these where 3 minute musical films, that where played on visual jukeboxes that showed short films of music. They mostly showed the singer or band on stage they were usually found in restaurants and bars. The majority of the music was jazz musicians. They was produced in New York, Chicago and Hollywood in between the 1940s and 1950s. They often included short dance sequences and soundies covered all music, from classical to big-band and so on. In 1958 the soundies led to the development of the scopitone which featured colour film.

1960- 1973

In 1964 a performance clip of the Animals was made House Of The Rising Sun which was a high quality colour clip and filmed in a studio on a specially-built set; with the group lip singing. The Beatles stared in their first feature film in 1964 and in 1965 they stared in their second. In 1965 The Beatles began making promotions clips they videoed 10 black and white promotional videos. Other well-known bands had the strategy.  The colour promotion clips for ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ and ‘Penny Lane’ were made in 1967. Making promo clips where the new range and suddenly all the stars where making them such as, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, The Who and many more.

1974- 1990s
This was the time music television the long running tv show top of the pops began playing music videos in the late 1970s. Music videos went mainstream when the U.S launched MTV in 1980s the first music video played was ‘Video Killed The Radio Star’. In the 1983 the most influential and ironic music video of all time was realised. Which was Michael Jackson’s Thriller, it is almost 13 minutes long and is still very popular today. In 1985 MTV released VH1 featuring softer music that appealed to an older audience. In 1988 hip hop music gained a mass audience because of the launch of yo! MTV raps. MTV began an ear of 24 hour a day music television. In my 1990s MTV allowed the directors name to be shown next to the artist, this allowed directors such as Mark Romanek and Michael Gondry to start their careers. Mark Romanek directed the most expensive music video of all time which was Michael and Janet Jacksons 'Scream' which cost $7 million to produce.

2005

In 2005 I Tunes made it possible for listing and viewings and downloading full length music videos. 20 days later after this was allowed to happen music video downloads reached 1 million. Also in 2005 YouTube was launched this had an even bigger impact on the music video industry this is because it was easier and quicker for people to access music videos to watch without having to pay for the video to download.

2010

Around the world the views of watching music videos reached 34 billion. In the month of may there was estimated 183 million views.

Target Audience

From the genre I have chosen to look at which is indie, I have decided my target audience will be 16+. From having a high interest in this type genre I think picking out a specific age and target audience is highly important because music brings groups of people together. Indie attracts a particular group of people which all have the same interest on one paticular subject this has a massive influence on the way my audience reacts and feel. Some people think it highly important to feel part of a group and different genres of music can create this. An example of this is looking at Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs he states that life is one journey but in reality we live in a hierarchy. Once you fulfill one level, you move back down to the bottom. Once you work your way up the education hierarchy and move up to university you move straight back down to the bottom and that is the circle of life. From looking at this is shows that once you move up you make different groups of friends through life and sometimes these groups are made by peoples choice’s in music. Which makes it highly important to target the correct Target Audience the different steps are Physiological which means breathing, food, water, sex, sleep, homeostasis and excretion this means the basic needs which everyone needs. The next step is safety which means feeling a need of security for example body, employment, resources  morality, the family, health and property. As you get further up it means the person is finding themselves as a individual which expresses themselves as a person. Next step is Esteem which creates the confidence of a people and the achievement of that person, they look for respect of others. Self-actualization is the top of the hierarchy which shows the person having morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, lack of prejudice and acceptance of facts.

From looking at this triangle I think my target audience will fall into the esteem category of steps in life. This shows that they need to belong to a group and their main important things are self-steam, status respect and admiration of others.  This shows that when socializing you become highly interested in a particular genre you want people to admire you so you focus on a main genre and have the state of mind that people admire/ look up to you if you listen to a particular type of music and more people will respect you. By my target audience this shows that people who listen to indie music will want a need of other people that are very focused on what kind of person they're and what group they want to be part of. By looking at this hierarchy it has given a clear understanding and research of my basic interest of what i want my target audience to be like. To look at demographics and psychographics will give me more of an outline of my target audience. Psychographics is a system of measuring consumers beliefs and interests, this system gathers psychological information which are called IAO variables which stands for interests, attitudes and opinions. Therefore groups can be classified in terms of variables like personality, values, attitudes, interests or lifestyles. Early psychographics research described consumers or audience members on the basis of psychological characteristics gathered from standardised questionnaires . Four main categories were subdivided into nine lifestyles:
Groups driven by needs: survivors and sustainer
Groups who are outer-directed: belongers, emulators and achievers
Groups who are inner-directed: experiential and societally conscious
Groups who are outer and inner directed: Integrated

These four different groups show different ideas and values but either choose if  they belong to be part of a group or if they're at the stage of achieving and also achieving different status's as they get older. Different people have a status which they expect to get respect from and this is all based on the type of music they listen to the psychogrpahics describe the way the consumer and audience members react and their attitudes and opinions I will produce a questionnaire which I will hand out to my target audience which will tell me the pyschogrpahics of what they're as an individual and it will help me find out what type of a group they belong to. Either driven  by needs, who are outer- directed, inner-directed and groups who are both outer and inner directed.

Questionnaire

This is the questionnaire I produced to give to a selection of my target audience. I asked 20 students who are 16+ and have a strong interest in indie music which is my selected target audience. The results I got back from both 4 question was that 15/20 said they feel like they belong in the group who are outer-directed which means they're belongers and emulators also achievers this is where my target audience will fall into because it gives a clear understanding that this is what they believe they're part of. The results I received from question 2 which was, do you think it is important to earn respect from the type of music you listen to? 17/20 said yes which shows that more than 50% believe that respect is earned from different peers and consumers who listen to indie music this gives a clear understanding of my target audience and I think the results I am receiving from this questionnaire are shaping my target audience into clear groups from pyschographics and the hierarchy of needs. My third question asked as Do you feel more part of a group if you all share the same interest in the same genre of music? 12/20 said yes course and 8 said sometimes and none said no. This shows that more than 50% said yes and the others said sometimes. This backs up the idea that people do want to belong and this shows them as an individual group which show strong interests. My final question was does music effect you as an individual? The results of this question show that 15 said yes 4 said sometimes and 1 said no. This shows the the majority are effected and the results from the whole questionnaire itself have shaped my target audience and shown how they believe it is important to belong and respect is a huge thing when it comes into a particular genre of music.

Focus Group- Auidence research

While carrying out my audience research I thought it would be a good idea to ask some of my target audience some questions about my particular genre which would help my research and planning more. The questions I asked where:

1. Do you prefer music videos telling a story or more abstract?

2. What do you normally expect to see in a music video?

3. What conventions do you expect to see for this genre?

4. These are my initial ideas what do you think of them?

5. What form of media do you use to listen to music?

6. What would you like to see in my music video?

After asking these questions I gathered the information which I found very useful because I think the information gathered helped understand my target audience more and get a real opinion. From creating this focus group I will take into count what my target audience have said and apply this to my planning and final product.
