Textual Analyses- Video 3

The third video I have chosen to look at for my last textual analyses is Kings of Leon - Sex on Fire. I have chosen this video because it follows the conventions of my chosen genre which is indie/rock. For example throughout the video it shows the band of kings of leon but also showing them as telling a story throughout it also.

This first shot shown is of an extreme close up of a mans eye, the dominant colour which is shown is a orange/golden which is following the conventions of the same of the song for 'sex on fire' for example orange/golden is relating to the idea of fire as the shot carries on this colour is still dominant. editing between straight cuts to still shots of different subjects. A still shot shown is of a bowl or something holding water i think this is use also to connect to the conventions of the idea of fire. Because water is connected with fire for the idea of putting out the fire which is seen as an opposite. The theory used by Levi Strauss who talked about binary opposite he believed that we understand works not just based on their meanings they directly contain, but our understanding of the opposite they reflect. For example our understanding of the word 'hero' depends of our understanding of the word 'villain.' Within the media world binary opposites are used on a frequent basis. So this relates to the idea of linking in the two binary opposite with each other from the idea of water and fire.

This shot shows a close up and still shot of him lying down covered in sweat beads which is also following the conventions of the name of the song showing what he might of been up to. The colour is still dominant even thought half of this face is in the dark this might be trying to give the message that he has done something wrong. But half of him is in the light which shows that not all of him is bad, it shows he's wearing a cross which relates the the idea of religion he looks to be lying in a very dark place which looks like a coffin or a something not pleasant. The lyrics relate to him being laid down which relate to the video and following the conventions. The connotations of him wearing black relates to half of his face being in the dark which link in with each other giving the message he is in the wrong and the cross round his neck linking in with it too.

The video then showing different shots of the band link in with the genre of this video of indie rock this shows the idea that its telling part of a story but also including the idea of indie which is following the conventions of the genre. The dominant colour is still shown even if it's not focusing on him which shows the idea of them being in the same position of him even though they're not laid down in somewhere which isn't very nice. The lighting used is very dark and while showing shots of the band it it using straight cuts back to him laid down singing which is relating it all together and how they're being represented.

These last shots shown relate back to the start of the video of the connotation of water which represented the idea of the binary opposite to fire. It shows the still shot of the water and then another shot of the water being poured over him. This shows that the water is being used to clean him and giving the idea of him being made pure. From the start of the video he is not wearing black clothing anymore and the majority of his body is shown in the light and the dominant colour which was shown throughout the video is not there anymore which shows that everything is more pure. He is shown in the light whereas everything around him is dark which shows his role has reversed from being in the dark and following the conventions from the start to him being shown in the light and the connotation of him has changed and the perception of him.

Textual Analyses- Video 2

The conventions of this video will follow the genre of indie, the video i have looked at and analysed is Alt-J Breezeblocks. The video follows different conventions towards a normal music video for example it is shown to go in reverse from the end to the start. The video creates a message given off to the audience which is all created by the cinematography, mise-en-scene the editing and the sound.

The first scene of the video shows a still shot of the women in the bath with a breeze block over her, which follows the conventions of the name of the song breeze blocks. The cinematography used here creates the opening scene and the ideology of the video. The video then uses a medium close up on a different person which is a man with his head in his hands. This relates back to the conventions of the video it is now creating the narrative of what is happening links in with the lyrics. Showing the audience that something has gone wrong. The cinematography then used is the camera slowly moving in on the man creating the idea of the audience that the narrative will be based on both of these characters.

The cinematography then uses a straight cut to an extreme close up of his hand and a ring showing the ideology that he is linked in with the other women and this is starting the narrative of his being married which give clues to the audience this is what they want to see and this is betraying the idea that something has gone wrong. At this point the music goes louder and more aggressive the ring is a sign of marriage and love which is not following the conventions of a normal love video showing happiness. The colours in the video are shown very dull and grey which creates the idea again that something has gone wrong. It then cuts to a close up of a tap running this is showing the idea of the video being on reverse the water is going backwards into the tap and then shows another still shot of the women laid in the bath this is creating the effect of the water running going backwards to how she ended up there. This is creating more of an narrative showing that the video is going from the bad to start.

This shot in the video shows the women coming up out of the bath editing is use of the women coming up out of the bath. It then edits to a low angle shot showing the man and women together creating the conventions of them being together even though these include that seem to be married the audience are not seeing the normal conventions of a couple the narrative is creating a very opposite idea of the word 'marriage'. This is displayed in this scene the man has the breezeblock in his hand which shows that it links in with how it got on top of her it shows the editing going backwards and it develops the narrative of an argument. Another shoulder shot from the women shows the anger in the man’s face as he has the breezeblock in his hand which shows how the cinematography is used to create the mood and the narrative. It then shows an medium close up of the women and then a straight cut to them both holding the breezeblock. Showing they was both involved in using it from the editing going backwards. They both have two hands of the breezeblock not showing who is the strongest they both are equally pulling the breezeblock to show that they're both involved no one is stronger than the other. It then shows the man pulling it and having the breezeblock in his hands this creates the idea of him then having power over the women because the breezeblock is creating the main narrative he has it over her. The lyrics used show the expression of the relationship between the two people for example the fear has gripped me but here I go my heart sinks as I jump up your hand grips hand as my eyes shut’ this bit of text links in with the show of the reverse of the glass bottle the shot links in with the words from the text for example 'fear' and 'heart' heart which links back to the idea of love and marriage but expression that fear is involved too which links back to the shot of the wedding ring shown on the man’s finger.

The cinematography used is shown very slow, in this scene it shows a low angle shot which creates the idea of then both being on the ground very low that the argument has not helped them, the camera is on the same height as them and is position behind something which shows that they're not taking up the whole screen the argument has made them less dominant and not having a lot of power you can only see parts of the women and man and this shows the developing narrative how they are now changing from the start of the video which shows the end they was both very dominant on the screen but as the video goes backwards it shows that they're less dominant. They're then both shown on the floor which created the effect of them being powerless and not much strength. As the music slows down it shows them both closer with each other linking in with the lyrics 'Please don't go, I'll eat you whole I love you so, I love you so, I love you so' linking in the word love now and relating back to start of the word marriage. These lyrics are repeated as the music then gets faster and shows the expression on both their faces using extreme close ups. The camera then cuts to a knife falling which relates to the word fear in the text. This creates the idea of danger the cuts between the scenes get faster and then cuts back to the water coming out of the tap and the extreme close up of his ring this is relating back to the start of the end of the narrative which is now showing the start of the narrative and how it developed and how she was back in the water and the breezeblock being over her.

At the end of the video it shows him on his own which creates the idea that he was the dominant figure from the start which is shown at the end. As he walks out the door you can see that the light is bright behind him whereas where the women is, in the dark and you can't see her. This gives the idea of him being in the right and showing light behind him where as she is in the wrong been shown in the dark even. It creates the end of the narrative of the relationship between the two different people and their idea of love and marriage. It is developed through the narrative throughout the video through the cinematography, the text, the editing and the sound. As he shuts the door you can see his figure in the light which shows this is where he is going into the light whereas as the door shuts you can just see the darkness where the women is.

Textual Analyses- Video 1

The conventions of this video follow the genre of indie rock, I have done textual analyses of Arctic Monkeys - Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High. The video shows one person which the video is focused on. Mise-en-scene is used to create the ideology of this this to link in with the genre. For example the way the person is dressed wearing a leather jacket and having his hair slick back he is creating his own imagine to fit in with the genre of song. This is something you except to see or you would imagine linked in with this genre.

The opening scene which is show the mise-en-scene the layout and the location of it being in a pub which relates to the idea of drinking and the having fun which sets the narrative from the start. The first character which the video is set of is show with other peoples around him which are dressed the same wearing leather jackets and this is again linked in with the ideology of the genre and them wanting to fit in. The location is seen as very dark and the bar behind the people is the only place that is lit up with lights this creates the effect that the people in front of the bar are not in a good place for example drinking which is seen as bad so they're seen in a darker light, whereas the people behind the bar are lit up seen as they're not socialising or drinking alcohol. The cinematography is just one long shot but using things such as close up to show them consuming alcohol. The music then goes very blurring as the cinematography is shown moving around creating a blurring affect. Trying to create the narrative to the audience that he is very drunk and trying to pass this message on to the audience. Editing is use to overlay different shots and the cinematography is show as a point of view shot showing what he is seeing to the audience that he is very drunk. The cinematography changes this perception throughout the shot from showing what we're seeing off him to what he is seeing, and they're two different things.

The shots changes to a different location which shows the mise-en-scene, of his being outside it looks dark and in comparison to the street which is all lit up by lights he is dressed all in dark clothing which creates the effect of him being in a bad position of vulnerable. This links in with the lyrics of ‘Tells me it’s home time But I’m not finished ‘Cause you’re not by my side’. Shows that the video and the song is linked in with another person by referring to someone else. This starts to create the narrative by the lyrics discussing someone else. As well as it relating to it being home time but he's not finished. Shows that even though he's out of the pub in a new location that something else might happen.

The first shot shows him passing some people which shows he is getting into trouble, they're lit up in the light where as he is show in the dark, again representing the fact he is in trouble and not in the right place. The 2nd shot shows him on his own the lightening has changed down the street which shows he is heading in another direction which is not very bright and very dull and dark which develops the narrative that he is walking somewhere which is not good and might lead to trouble. As he is walking the cinematography used is related back to how it shows what his point of view is to how we see what is happening and how they're different. It shows him messages on his phone to the person which is referenced to in the start of the video through the lyrics/text.

The cinematography used in this shot shows him lying on the ground which means he is low to the ground which means he hasn't got much respect from anyone, he is seen on the floor which the area around him is empty and lit up. The camera zooms forward to him on the ground. It shows a point of view shot and editing is used which shows the camera go fuzzing showing his imagination. The audience is seeing something which he is imagining. Which then again cuts back to what is actually happening this shows that the narrative is trying to create a story of what he can see when he is drunk whereas what is actually happening in completely different and the audience is discovering this and the use of cinematography and editing is creating this.

The end scene shows a medium shot of a location and a girl which shows the mise-en-scene of her being inside to comparison he is outside, she relates back to the start to finding the messages from the man who is outside trying to find her. This ends the narrative by finally being introduced to the person which is seen as the main part of the narrative. Her house is all lit up and this is how the difference between both of the two characters is shown which ends the video.
