Textual Analyses- Video 2

The conventions of this video will follow the genre of indie, the video i have looked at and analysed is Alt-J Breezeblocks. The video follows different conventions towards a normal music video for example it is shown to go in reverse from the end to the start. The video creates a message given off to the audience which is all created by the cinematography, mise-en-scene the editing and the sound.

The first scene of the video shows a still shot of the women in the bath with a breeze block over her, which follows the conventions of the name of the song breeze blocks. The cinematography used here creates the opening scene and the ideology of the video. The video then uses a medium close up on a different person which is a man with his head in his hands. This relates back to the conventions of the video it is now creating the narrative of what is happening links in with the lyrics. Showing the audience that something has gone wrong. The cinematography then used is the camera slowly moving in on the man creating the idea of the audience that the narrative will be based on both of these characters.

The cinematography then uses a straight cut to an extreme close up of his hand and a ring showing the ideology that he is linked in with the other women and this is starting the narrative of his being married which give clues to the audience this is what they want to see and this is betraying the idea that something has gone wrong. At this point the music goes louder and more aggressive the ring is a sign of marriage and love which is not following the conventions of a normal love video showing happiness. The colours in the video are shown very dull and grey which creates the idea again that something has gone wrong. It then cuts to a close up of a tap running this is showing the idea of the video being on reverse the water is going backwards into the tap and then shows another still shot of the women laid in the bath this is creating the effect of the water running going backwards to how she ended up there. This is creating more of an narrative showing that the video is going from the bad to start.

This shot in the video shows the women coming up out of the bath editing is use of the women coming up out of the bath. It then edits to a low angle shot showing the man and women together creating the conventions of them being together even though these include that seem to be married the audience are not seeing the normal conventions of a couple the narrative is creating a very opposite idea of the word 'marriage'. This is displayed in this scene the man has the breezeblock in his hand which shows that it links in with how it got on top of her it shows the editing going backwards and it develops the narrative of an argument. Another shoulder shot from the women shows the anger in the man’s face as he has the breezeblock in his hand which shows how the cinematography is used to create the mood and the narrative. It then shows an medium close up of the women and then a straight cut to them both holding the breezeblock. Showing they was both involved in using it from the editing going backwards. They both have two hands of the breezeblock not showing who is the strongest they both are equally pulling the breezeblock to show that they're both involved no one is stronger than the other. It then shows the man pulling it and having the breezeblock in his hands this creates the idea of him then having power over the women because the breezeblock is creating the main narrative he has it over her. The lyrics used show the expression of the relationship between the two people for example the fear has gripped me but here I go my heart sinks as I jump up your hand grips hand as my eyes shut’ this bit of text links in with the show of the reverse of the glass bottle the shot links in with the words from the text for example 'fear' and 'heart' heart which links back to the idea of love and marriage but expression that fear is involved too which links back to the shot of the wedding ring shown on the man’s finger.

The cinematography used is shown very slow, in this scene it shows a low angle shot which creates the idea of then both being on the ground very low that the argument has not helped them, the camera is on the same height as them and is position behind something which shows that they're not taking up the whole screen the argument has made them less dominant and not having a lot of power you can only see parts of the women and man and this shows the developing narrative how they are now changing from the start of the video which shows the end they was both very dominant on the screen but as the video goes backwards it shows that they're less dominant. They're then both shown on the floor which created the effect of them being powerless and not much strength. As the music slows down it shows them both closer with each other linking in with the lyrics 'Please don't go, I'll eat you whole I love you so, I love you so, I love you so' linking in the word love now and relating back to start of the word marriage. These lyrics are repeated as the music then gets faster and shows the expression on both their faces using extreme close ups. The camera then cuts to a knife falling which relates to the word fear in the text. This creates the idea of danger the cuts between the scenes get faster and then cuts back to the water coming out of the tap and the extreme close up of his ring this is relating back to the start of the end of the narrative which is now showing the start of the narrative and how it developed and how she was back in the water and the breezeblock being over her.

At the end of the video it shows him on his own which creates the idea that he was the dominant figure from the start which is shown at the end. As he walks out the door you can see that the light is bright behind him whereas where the women is, in the dark and you can't see her. This gives the idea of him being in the right and showing light behind him where as she is in the wrong been shown in the dark even. It creates the end of the narrative of the relationship between the two different people and their idea of love and marriage. It is developed through the narrative throughout the video through the cinematography, the text, the editing and the sound. As he shuts the door you can see his figure in the light which shows this is where he is going into the light whereas as the door shuts you can just see the darkness where the women is.
