Textual Analyses- Video 1

The conventions of this video follow the genre of indie rock, I have done textual analyses of Arctic Monkeys - Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High. The video shows one person which the video is focused on. Mise-en-scene is used to create the ideology of this this to link in with the genre. For example the way the person is dressed wearing a leather jacket and having his hair slick back he is creating his own imagine to fit in with the genre of song. This is something you except to see or you would imagine linked in with this genre.

The opening scene which is show the mise-en-scene the layout and the location of it being in a pub which relates to the idea of drinking and the having fun which sets the narrative from the start. The first character which the video is set of is show with other peoples around him which are dressed the same wearing leather jackets and this is again linked in with the ideology of the genre and them wanting to fit in. The location is seen as very dark and the bar behind the people is the only place that is lit up with lights this creates the effect that the people in front of the bar are not in a good place for example drinking which is seen as bad so they're seen in a darker light, whereas the people behind the bar are lit up seen as they're not socialising or drinking alcohol. The cinematography is just one long shot but using things such as close up to show them consuming alcohol. The music then goes very blurring as the cinematography is shown moving around creating a blurring affect. Trying to create the narrative to the audience that he is very drunk and trying to pass this message on to the audience. Editing is use to overlay different shots and the cinematography is show as a point of view shot showing what he is seeing to the audience that he is very drunk. The cinematography changes this perception throughout the shot from showing what we're seeing off him to what he is seeing, and they're two different things.

The shots changes to a different location which shows the mise-en-scene, of his being outside it looks dark and in comparison to the street which is all lit up by lights he is dressed all in dark clothing which creates the effect of him being in a bad position of vulnerable. This links in with the lyrics of ‘Tells me it’s home time But I’m not finished ‘Cause you’re not by my side’. Shows that the video and the song is linked in with another person by referring to someone else. This starts to create the narrative by the lyrics discussing someone else. As well as it relating to it being home time but he's not finished. Shows that even though he's out of the pub in a new location that something else might happen.

The first shot shows him passing some people which shows he is getting into trouble, they're lit up in the light where as he is show in the dark, again representing the fact he is in trouble and not in the right place. The 2nd shot shows him on his own the lightening has changed down the street which shows he is heading in another direction which is not very bright and very dull and dark which develops the narrative that he is walking somewhere which is not good and might lead to trouble. As he is walking the cinematography used is related back to how it shows what his point of view is to how we see what is happening and how they're different. It shows him messages on his phone to the person which is referenced to in the start of the video through the lyrics/text.

The cinematography used in this shot shows him lying on the ground which means he is low to the ground which means he hasn't got much respect from anyone, he is seen on the floor which the area around him is empty and lit up. The camera zooms forward to him on the ground. It shows a point of view shot and editing is used which shows the camera go fuzzing showing his imagination. The audience is seeing something which he is imagining. Which then again cuts back to what is actually happening this shows that the narrative is trying to create a story of what he can see when he is drunk whereas what is actually happening in completely different and the audience is discovering this and the use of cinematography and editing is creating this.

The end scene shows a medium shot of a location and a girl which shows the mise-en-scene of her being inside to comparison he is outside, she relates back to the start to finding the messages from the man who is outside trying to find her. This ends the narrative by finally being introduced to the person which is seen as the main part of the narrative. Her house is all lit up and this is how the difference between both of the two characters is shown which ends the video.
